Pros and Cons of a wood burning stove
PROS of installing a wood buring stove
A wood buring stove is a low pollution product.
A wood buring stove is cheap to run.
A wood buring stove uses renewable energy. Trees can be replanted whereas coal or gas (which currently heat your house even if you are on electrical power only) are running out.
A wood buring stove is reliable. A cast iron or steel box is basically all that you have got every part is easily replaceable without further high cost.
A wood buring stove adds character and makes a room cosy.
A wood buring stove produces ash which is excellent for the garden.
A wood buring stove is desireable. It may help sell your home when you want to move on.
A wood stove means having an axe around the place and the occassional joy of chopping logs on a crisp sunny morning.
CONS against installing a wood buring stove
A wood buring stove is dirty. You have to empty the ash. You also need to clean the glass door of your woodstove regularly.
A wood buring stove requires space for log storage.
A wood buring stove installation can be problematic and costly.
A wood buring stove has very hot surfaces. Children and adults can burn themselves if they touch the outside of a stove. Pets can also get burned, although they generally do not repeat the mistake whereas we humans seem slower on the uptake.
A wood buring stove requires an annual visit from a chimney sweep. This is an ongoing cost that should not be ignored. A chimney fire will risk your entire house.
A wood stove means having an axe around the place and the occassional task of chopping logs on a miserable wet day
Overall I personally find that the pros of a log burning stove outweigh the cons of a log burning stove many times over.
