MATHS GUIDES

Key Stage Two Mathematics: the Study Guide

Designed to exactly match the requirements of the National Tests at Key Stage Two, this book covers all the major topics in Maths. Clear explaination is a hallmark of this series which also features a lot of awful jokes that the children really enjoy. Humor is a rarely used tool in revision guides and its nice to see a publisher who is prepared to listen to the teachers who have known the power of jokes to aid retention for many years. An excellent piece of maths help for key stage 2.

Carol Vorderman's Maths Made Easy Book 2: Ages 7-8

This book goes over the core skills needed for KS2 in a light, enjoyable style. Nice drawings and clever gold star stickers to help children know they are achieving something. Very cheap and simple, but this book does seem to work.

Carol Vorderman's Maths Made Easy - Key Stage 2, Ages 7-9: Subtraction

This "Maths Made Easy" book really does look at subtraction in a variety of ways, so your child may well find their particular learning style in here. The gold star stickers help the children feel they are achieving, although the certificate signed by Carol Vorderman might be pushing it a bit for some kids. The usual high quality attention to detail in production and graphic style that mark out Dorling Kindersley books as excellent for children.

I Love Maths - CD ROM

A fantastic CD ROM from Dorling Kindersley. This sophisticated software adjusts the pace of learning based on the child's responses, making it great for students between ages 7 and 11 .The format is themed games (Aztec Temple Adventures, Ancient Egyptian Puzzles and so on) where children learn about symbols, measurement, data handling and many other topics.

The most important feature of this software is that parents can easily tweak some of the games to cover the exact curriculum topics their children need to study . When we heard about this we thought it might be difficult to do and that we might make mistakes, but it was so easy to do (mostly tick boxes) and the results were worth it.

Apparently the CD contains over two million maths questions, so it can be replayed many many times without your child losing interest. We also like the price which is great for the equivalent of a whole library of traditional maths books.

Mind Maps for Kids: The Shortcut to Success at School

Mind-Mapping works just as well for kids as for adults. Tony Buzan's great book provides the 'magic formula' that allows so many people to boost their thinking abilities. We recommend this title for kids who will love the simplicity of this truly beneficial technique.
