The Magician and the Parrot

A magician was working on a cruise liner. His job was entertaining the passengers after meals in the dining room. However, he wasn't a great success because the ship's captain had a talking parrot, and this bird kept giving away his secrets.

The magician might just have successfully made a dove seem to appear from nowhere when the parrot would skreetch "it was under his jacket...it was under his jacket".

Whenthe magician had the audience enthralled with a particularly difficult dissapearance the bird cried out "false bottom.. false bottom".

If the magician was in the middle of a card trick, the captains parrot would call "eight of clubs... eight of clubs" and ruin it for the magician from the outset.

One night in a terrible storm the cruise liner hit a reef and was lost with almost everyone aboard. I say almost everyone, because come the morning when the winds calmed and the ocean flattened, all that could be seen in the dawn light was a large piece of flotsam, with the magician lying at one end. At the other end, looking bedraggled and miserable, his feathers dripping with salt water, sat the parrot. The ship was nowhere to be seen.

The parrot looked at the magician in silence for over an hour. Eventually as the sun warmed his back the magician stirred and sat up. The parrot slowly walked along the plank, sidled up close to the magician's ear and quietly said "alright, I give in, where did you hide it?"
