As a relief for common colds, holy basil leaves are boiled leaves boiled in a tea with cardamon, milk and sugar.

Holy basil is also a major ingredient of many Ayurvedic cough syrups. It is often combined with ginger, garlic, cardamon and cloves.

Basil leaves are often taken as a stress reliever. In India people sometimes chew a wad of about around 10 leaves which is said to calm the nerves.

The herb often used as a cure for insect bites. Fresh leaves rubbed against the bite are said to reduce the inflamation, much as the europeans rub 'Doc' leaves on nettle stings.

The herb is also often found being used in homemade toothpastes.

Externally, a powdered concoction containing Holy Basil has been found being sold as a headache reliever when applied to the forehead.
