Greek Islands: Syros

Along with Andros and Mykonos, Syros is one of the of the Cyclades islands in the north Aegean.

Many visitors stop here to change ferries on the major island hopping route south of athens, but comparatively few people stop to explore Syros.

Those who do decide to stay on Syros are rewarded by friendly locals and an interesting island.

Syros ErmoupolisThe capital Ermoupolis is named after the greek god Hermes. It is a beautifully built town bedecked with neoclassical architecture. The island became wealthy due to the importance of Syros as a commercial shipping center in the nineteenth Century.

The northern part of Syros is mountainous but the rest of the island is a deligtful mix of farmland and rolling hills.

Beaches on Syros

The south and west of the island of Syros is where you find the best beaches. We reccomend sandy Galissa beach along with Poseidonia Finikas, Kini and Megas Gialos. You will find some amenities (tavernas) on all these beaches.
