Greek Islands: Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the most popular islands to visit, and for very good reason. Rhodes is locally known as Rodos.

Rhodes is the largest of the dodecanese islands and fourth largest of all greek islands.

Weather Forecast for Rhodes

From the medival streets of Rhodes town in the east to the windswept grandeur of Prasonisi in the west the island is filled with wonders. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the world once stood here.

Between the two you will find The diving at Kalithea, the nightlife of Faliraki, the beauty of Efta Piges and Pettaloudes and above all the ancient city of Lindos, the second of Rhodes' world heritage treasures.

On the north of the island the ancient ruins of Kamiros are spectacular.

We have come back 3 times now and loved each more than the last. I strongly reccomend Rhodes as an island with something for everyone.

Photography spots

On the south coast, Lindos has picture perfect white walls. The best shot of the entire bay is from the top of the hill, a long walk from the busstop, so ask the driver to let you off early.

Prasonissi on the extreme tip of the island is a long bus or car drive from Rhodes town, but worth it for spectacular sunset phtography.

Petaloudes valley of the butterflies is lovely any time of year.

Snorkelling

If you are looking for goggles and snorkel, then there is a good shop in Rhodes town, just inland from Mandarki Harbour. Just go to the old market place and head townard the bus station. It is a little shop but they have proper equipment at reasonable prices.

Kalithea

Kallithea (Kalithea) is a beach resort just ten minutes up the road from Rhodes Town with the usual sunbeds and parasols for hire.

There was a health spa here in the 1920's and they have been recently renovated as public gardens. The beach itself is rocky rather than sandy, so it doesn't attract hordes of horrible brits.

Kallithea is a greaat location for scuba diving. You walk into the water fully kitted up and then dive down along the inlet.

Rhodes Town

Loads of excellent accomodation within the old city. Just turn up at Mandraki harbour and allow the touts to comete for your attention. In high season however, I advise you to book in advance or else you will end up paying a fortune for a nasty sweaty dive somewhere.

Hill Walking

Is Rhodes good for hill walking. It looks good on the maps, but has anyone any experience of walks on Rhodes?

Terri

Butterflies

Now that spring has come the valley of butterflies is really coming in to its own. Bring a camera and tripod for some amazing wildlife shots. The valley (marked 'Petaloudes' on most tourist maps) is high in the mountains near Psinthos, (take the road inland from Afandou, south of Faliraki).

Rhodes does get hot.

Well, it can get amazingly hot on Rhodes in summer, but here is a tip. If the temperature rises too far, go to the north side of the island. The prevailing winds keep the north cooler. Also avoid Lindos which is a sun trap and is on average 10 degrees hotter than Rhodes town.

Chris

How hot does it get?

Isn't it too hot to go to Rhodes in August?

Lamps

They sell lovely hanging lamps in Lindos. A gem amongst the usual tourist tat.

Lindos

I think Lindos has the best beach. It is close to town and there is a great bar.

Can anyone reccomend a beach?

I always find the Greek islands have lovely hidden beaches but it an take all week to find a good one. Has anyone got a favourite beach they want to share with us?

Mandraki harbour

Mandraki harbour is definitely the best spot on the island for cocktails.
