Greek Islands: Leros

Leros is one of the dodecanese islands. It is not famed for tourism and many greeks remember the infamous name the island had as the home of a penal colony in the 1970s. However, tourists are begining to trickle in, and are finding that the island of Leros is a bit of a hidden gem, despite its size. Leros even has its own airport now.

Towns of Leros.

History of Leros

The island was sacred to Artemis. the Goddess of hunting. The temple of Artemis is in the north of the island, close to the airport.

In 1314 Leros was occupied by the Knights of St.John of Rhodes and they stayed until the fifteen hundreds.

Visiting Leros?

Come to stay for a few days and see why people come back year after year.

Beaches on Leros

I would avoid Agia Kioura and Blefoutis beaches in the north as they are too close to the airport. Instead head south to Xirokambos beach which is in a sheltered bay and has crystal clear waters. Excellent for Scuba diving and snorkelling.

Dont let kids play on the rocks

Our 11 year old broke his ankle on day one. It pretty much ruined the holiday.
