Greek Food Dictionary

Here are our favourite greek foods. We have spent holidays on the islands and always sought out the local delicacies.



Baklava: Layers of sticky paper-thin filo pastry with honey and chopped nuts.
Bourekakia: stuffed filo puff pastry
Dolmades: stuffed vineleaves
Feta: salty white goat cheese
Gouvetsi: oven baked cassaroles
Haloumi: sheep's milk cheese flavoured with mint. Excellent for the barbecue
Kalamari: squid usually cooked quickly over high heat.
Kalamata: famous large black olives
Moussaka: Aubergine and mince; like a pastaless lasagne topped with a bechamel style sauce
Souvlaki: skewers of meat and veg grilled.
Spanakopeta; spinach filo pastries
Tahini: crushed sesame seed paste
Taramasalata: mullet roe and mayonaise dip
Tsatziki: cucumber yogurt dip

Greek Drink

Ouzo: aniseed flavoured booze
Retsina: wine flavored with pine resin. Originally the flavour came accidentally from pine barrels, but the greeks got a taste for it.
Raki: I have no idea what it is but it is alcoholic and makes you wish you were dead.
