The wonderful thing about board games is that they actually teach kids quite a lot about decision making and social interaction.

teaches some basic geography alongside strategic planning.

is a lesson in how having a wide range of interests can be more beneficial
in life than just focusing on one thing alone.
These are just a few ideas. There are many hundreds of excellent board games and aside from the "Noel Edmonds Deal or no Deal game" (which teaches absolutely nothing that could benefit anybody) they all will add to a child's unverstanding of the world around him.
