On the other hand, some cars start out uncool and over time become cooler. A '57 Chevvy was not a cool car in 1957; but today the ice cracks the tarmac whenever one drives by.

In the 1950's Enzo Ferarri took time out from designing his Italian classic sports cars to whip up the design for the Mini for a small English firm called Austin. The original Mini is still cooler than a Scotmans knees in January after more than 50 years on the road.

 

German cars are often technically very very good (The VW Golf is one of the worlds greatest engineering achievements) but they are rarely cool. Aside from Any Audi from the last 30 years and the Porche 944 the Germans do not do cool. They do oompah bands, good cars and beer instead - bless them.

So, what is it that makes a cool car? Is it simply the lines? The look? the shape? the colour schemes? the ride? the comfort? the engine?

No, it is all those and more. Cool is an intangeable combination of style and substance. Cool is understated elegace, raw power and lets face it, cool is also sexy.

What extras define a cool car?

Adding extras to an uncool car will never make it cool. However, if a car comes off the forecourt with:

then for the time being it can probably be considered cool enough that an in-car refridgerator would be a waste of time.

In five years time, when this list is standard for all new cars, then the cool cars are going to have to up the ante.
