We would always recommend that you only buy free range chickens. Results of numerous blind tastings show that thet taste much better and you are safe in the knowledge that no chicken had to suffer unduly for your dinner.
When buying a chicken, look at their knees. Black or raw spots is a sign
of unhealthy rearing conditions. These are urea burns caused by the chicken
not being able to walk and kneeling in its own excerement. Some producers
now file the knees off to prevent you seeing this, so look carefully and if
a batch of chickens includes any with suspiscios knees, reject them and tell
your supplier to get free range chickens instead.
