This book really is a superb explaination of human origins. The eminent archaeologist was responsible for some of the really important early human finds in Africa and so he knows what he is talking about. He doesn't foist theories down the readers throat and oftern adds vignettes bringing the story of mankind to life in a way that few respected archaeologists can do. Areas covered in wonderful detail include: the shift from four legs to two, the problems with fossil evidence, tool use decoration, subsistance and language. I read it three times in the course of the last two years and will probably pick it up again soon. Quite simply, this is the book that must be read by anyone interested in where we come from.
