An Anglo Saxon Reading List

Early medieval reading (mostly with a British or Northern European slant).

stonehengeThe Anglo-Saxon World: An Anthology
Kevin Crossley-Holland (ed)
This one is the perfect all purpose background to the period..

A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary (Medieval Academy Reprints for Teaching)
John Hall
I found this gem in a second-hand bookshop just last week. Lays out our linguistic etymology and will be of real benefit when working with written evidence.

stonehengeThe Anglo-Saxon Way of Death
Samantha Lucy
A fascinating read. Very useful for interpreting anglo-saxon graves and filled with more detail on the subject than I was expecting. I was also pleased to find that aside from the title, Ms Lucy can write without once resorting to overly grusome, lurid or overdramatised passages. This is an excellent book that will really help you to understand burial practices in early medieval times.
