There were far fewer colours available during the rennaisence and the masters worked with a restricted palette. Restricting our palettes today forces us to find the same combinations and tonal touch that the masters achieved.
Here is a proposed palette which should cover a similar range to painters from the 15th to 18th century.

Windsor and Newton provide all of these colours as oil paints. I find this palette reminds me most of the work of Rubens.
