I have great memories of my visit to Masada. The archaeology is very visible and exceedingly descriptive. The remains of the ramp and associated story of its construction bring to light the unstoppable force of the Roman war machine and the hopeless position of the defending rebels.

BBC NEWS | Roman water still on tap gave me something to smile about. Some Roman engineers laid some wooden pipes in Northumbria around 100 ad, and they are still working today, flooding the excavation trenches at Vindolanda. Perfect!

Guardian Unlimited reports that a salvage team plan to raise the Graf Spee. Work begins soon on lifting the wreck after 60 years underwater in Uraguay.
